Important Gothic Revival Library Table: New York, ca. 1840-60
New York, New York, ca.1840-60. Walnut with white marble top. Gothic inset decoration on pedestal base and drawers. Spandrel supports adorning the pedestal and top. Quatrefoil designs on base.
Dimensions: 31"H x 42 1/2" x 42 1/2"
Purchased in 1960's by current owner's mother in New Jersey
Conditions: Minor loss to veneer banding surrounding top (see photos). Marble top looks to be replaced due to clean edges. Drawer knob missing.
This table is believed to be made in the New York City area around 1840-60. The maker of this table and tables like these is unknown. A similar but much fancier table in design and marble top currently is on exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The table was acquired in 1986 and came from the Frederick Deming Library in Newburgh, NY.

Another table by this cabinetmaker was sold on 1st dibs. This table had a replaced baize top and scaled down in design from the table on exhibit at The Met. It was exhibited at Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York in 2006. In order to appeal to buyers, cabinetmakers "customized" orders according to the demand of the client. On all three examples of this table, the use of identical design elements is illustrated.

The carburetor has likely has been modified for improved performance ability.
